Drawing and Painting Figure

with Hermann Brandt
February 14 - 21, 2018

Immerse yourself in 4 days of drawing and painting the human form from life.

Learn to use measurement and points of reference to create likeness - and line variance to express gesture and mood.

You will experiment with dry mediums like graphite, charcoal, pastel and chalk pencil on paper as well as oil or acrylic sketches on canvas or panel.

A lot of emphasis will be given to drawing and painting accurately.

Each day will focus on a different medium, setting and aspect of the figure - this will include the clothed and unclothed model, hands, feet and portrait.

Come away with a pile of drawings and a much more intimate understanding of the human body

All levels welcome.

While you're busy creating art, your friendly hosts at Casa Buena will be working hard, ensuring that your stay is a memorable one. Outstanding food, accommodations, and field trips will satisfy your desires for both comfort and adventure.

Workshop Instructor:
Hermann Brandt

I was born in South Africa and grew up both there and in Zimbabwe. I loved the bush and drew and painted the animals and birds from an early age. Art was not offered at schools in the places we lived. Until we moved to Cape Town, I had no access to galleries or art-supply stores but I did what I could with what I had.

I was not encouraged to pursue art but enrolled in the graphic design program at the Pretoria Tech Art School, focusing my attention on drawing, painting and illustration.

We currently live just south of Cochrane, Alberta. From my studio, I can see the Rocky Mountains stretch across the entire horizon from north to south. Deer, foxes and coyotes come right through the yard daily. We have porcupines and other small animals living in the bushes and moose and bear show up from time to time.

As for mediums, I paint primarily in oils, but will use acrylic as an under-painting for bigger studio pieces. Any dry medium works for drawing – graphite, charcoal, coloured pencil, pastel... For sculpting I use petroleum-based clay and cast in bronze. Plein air painting is one of my favourite things to do. I go out as often as I can, winter and summer. I love being out in the sun and the fresh air with birds, water, mountains and insects … the sounds, smells and serendipitous happenings – it is so much more than just painting!

“Art is a challenging but deeply rewarding and all encompassing pursuit. For me it is an expression of gratefulness for having been given a gift. I also see it as a platform, a way to be involved in the issues of our day. I want my artwork to celebrate our beautiful world but also to tell the stories of real people in real circumstances and hopefully make a real difference – to them. I want it to draw attention to the things we find difficult to face – people in desperate circumstances, to endangered species and threatened habitats. I want to do what I can with what I have.”

Creativity is a gift, reflecting in and through us the nature of God. It would be contrary not to understand it as such or live accordingly.
