Description:

Join us for a six-day painting adventure immersed in the rustic charm of rural Mexico. Our journey begins with an exploration and painting session amidst the 19th-century ruins of the sugar mill town of La Escondida. Surrounded by the beautiful remnants of its illustrious past, this picturesque setting provides the perfect backdrop for plein air painting, with its textured landscapes, vibrant colors, and the melodic sounds of roosters echoing through the air.

As the day comes to a close, we'll dine and spend the night in the nearby town of Bellavista, once a vibrant hub of the textile industry. The architecture, characterized by colorful doorways adorning stone buildings, serves as a poignant reminder of its bustling past, creating a welcoming atmosphere for our overnight stay.

Following morning, we'll set out for the neighboring town of Compostela, a designated Pueblo Magico since its establishment in 1540. Compostela offers a great blend of colonial history, captivating architecture, and natural beauty, promising unparalleled visual experiences for all. Compostela will serve as our home base for the next two nights as we venture out to explore, paint, and capture the enchanting architecture of the town, all while savoring the delicious flavors of local cuisine.

Limited to only 5 people ( Previous workshop participants are invited to register and prolong their experience with this enriching adventure. Registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis)

I prefer to paint places where I have spent a significant amount of time and had powerful emotional experiences.

After hiking or traveling on water for many miles, I choose a single location that offers many possible compositions, from close-ups to great vistas. Remaining at one location enables me to soak up the necessary energy for future studio work.

In addition to seeing, I also tune my ear to the sounds that surround me. Through experience, I have found that not all sounds can be detected and absorbed at once. It can take many days to clearly hear and associate sounds with surrounding forms.

This dimension of awareness greatly enhances the overall quality of my paintings. "

Workshop Instructor:

DOMINIK MODLINSKI

Dominik Modlinski was born in 1970 in Warsaw, Poland. From an early age, he studied printmaking and later attended the School for Artistic Crafts and Design in Warsaw. In 1987, he immigrated to Canada and studied Fine Arts at Ontario College of Art in Toronto, where he graduated with honours.

Dominik’s painting journeys are a wilderness experience based upon weeks of traveling rugged and barren lands to capture, in plein air style, the majesty of nature. At the heart of his travels is a quest to discover and depict the inherent balance and truthfulness found in nature. Dominik enjoys the physical challenge that painting in such remote locations entails. It is also an opportunity to visually celebrate a unique ecosystem. For this artist, the celebration of nature is really at the heart of his work. Dominik’s northern travels have inspired him to explore further and visit many of Earth's last remaining wilderness areas. Some of the most extreme painting expeditions took him across continents and hemispheres such as Antarctica, the High Arctic, Greenland, Patagonia, into the wilds of Namibia, South Africa, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador. As we witness the disappearance of wilderness around the globe, Modlinski’s quest is to portray the need to preserve the beauty of our planet and inspire people to do so through his paintings, photographs, stories, and videos.

His other passion is martial arts, which he has studied for 35 years, and he currently holds a 6th degree black belt in Karate. Dominik currently lives and paints in Nanaimo on beautiful Vancouver Island. He is represented by fine art galleries across Canada and the USA. Art supplies for the workshop

Investing in quality art materials is essential for artists who are serious about their craft and wish to improve their skills. While it's true that cheap, hobby-type supplies can be tempting due to their lower price tags, they often lack the necessary quality and performance required to create high-quality and lasting artwork. They offer better pigmentation, color accuracy, and consistency, which allows for more precise and controlled application. This translates into improved results in terms of color vibrancy, blending, and overall visual impact.
