CATCHING THE LIGHT

February 7 -16, 2024
with Gaye Adams

‘Discover the joy of painting the living, breathing landscape’

Workshop description:

When we paint from photos, much nuance is lost to us, and a sense of place and experience and energy is often sacrificed as we are painting a moment frozen in time.  Painting the landscape from life in real time can feel daunting, but it is also exhilarating and  serves as a super highway to improving your painting skills.
This workshop will lay out an approach for capturing the atmosphere, mood and light in the transient landscape.  It will break down the process into bite size chunks that will empower painters to start and complete a field study in a limited amount of time.

Bring your enthusiasm and energy, and let's have a wonderful time exploring the amazing experience of painting on location.

My journey as a painter reflects my journey as a citizen of the planet.  It is one of awe, bewilderment, learning, successes, failures and of being ever a student.  My subject matter is most often  around the effects of light.  It is always a fascinating process to see light appear in a painting.  I find it challenging and stimulating to paint in this way....I don't think I will ever grow tired of it.

In my painting I strive convey what inspires me and what makes my pulse quicken.  I paint representationally , but I am very engaged in letting the paint speak, and I am happy for those moments when the paint itself takes on a voice and a life of its own, when the unexpected and unplanned emerges

At that point the energy and magic of the artistic process is at it's best.  I am humbled and elated when it occurs.  It's what keeps me painting.

I paint on location often, as I love the experience and the practice it affords, and I also love being in nature, painting an experience with all the nuances of the calls of sea birds, the smell in the air, and all else that comes with it.”

While you're busy creating art, your friendly hosts at Casa Buena will be working hard, ensuring that your stay is a memorable one. Outstanding food, accommodations, and field trips will satisfy your desires for both comfort and adventure.

Workshop Instructor:

GAYE ADAMS

Gaye has enjoyed working professionally as an artist for over 30 years. During that time she has explored most mediums and subject matter. Through it all what remains constant is her delight with painting the effects of light and atomosphere, which is the signature of her work.

An avid plein air painter, she not only enjoys the process of immersing herself in nature, but finds the knowledge and experience gained painting in the field is key in informing her larger studio works.

The artist currently holds a Senior Signature status with the Federation of Canadian Artists and a Master Pastellist status with the Pastel Artists of Canada. In addition she is an involved member of the Artists for Conservation organization.

Gaye currently is working primarily in oils because it lends itself so well to painting on location, and enjoys travelling to remote and pristine locations, primarily in BC, for the love and challenge of it.

In addition to her field and studio work, Gaye is a popular art instructor and enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge with her students both here and abroad.

She currently serves as Standards Chair with the Federation of Canadian Artists and works out of her home studio in Langley, BC.
