with Bobbi Dunlop

Simple “ Simple Simple Simple ”
is Bobbi's teaching and painting philosophy!

Workshop description:

Join me for 7-Days of artistic “bliss” … where we will explore and paint the wonderful treasures of this beautiful tropical Mexican paradise! Breaking painting into ‘simple ideas” is Bobbi’s painting philosophy, so all levels - from new artists to advanced artists - are welcome.

Join me! For this 7-day exploration of rural Mexico, and an artist’s dream location, the beautiful Casa Buena Art Retreat

… We’ll explore incredible painting locales in a challenging and fun 4-Day Oil/Acrylic Painting Workshop, painting from life (both still life and en plein air) … in the luscious tropical gardens and pristine beaches of this authentic rural retreat.

You’ll learn Bobbi’s “simple” approach to joyful painting as Bobbi begins each workshop day with an oil painting demonstration of that day’s subject. You will receive plenty of one-on-one, hands on guidance throughout as she sensitively guides you to your own personal artistic vision.

Come along to share and connect with other like-minded artistic souls while relaxing in this beautiful tropical setting, enjoying the incredible hospitality that Jane and Dallas are known for.

Here is your 4-Day Painting Workshop Outline for this exciting 7 Day retreat :

Each day will begin with an oil demonstration by Bobbi. Emphasis will be on painting your personal “idea”,

implementing the fundamentals of painting: Shape, Value, Edges & Colour.

This workshop is suitable for all levels (some experience) as Bobbi will meet you where you are at in your artistic journey.

First Up: Day 1 Painting the Still Life - Casa Buena is full of incredibly beautiful objects for a colourful, eclectic and inviting still life painting. We’ll set up our still lifes in comfort on the beautiful veranda of Casa Buena . This subject, on our first day, will allow us the opportunity to “warm up” to our painting, get to know one another, all while relaxing, learning and enjoying this incredible tropical setting (not to mention, steps away from the pool ;))

Next Up: Day 2 Painting In The Garden - We'll take a step off the veranda and into the luscious surrounding tropical area of Casa Buena … situated on the ocean, there is inspiration for a painting at every turn. In your exploration you’ll find tropical florals, charming architecture and gorgeous ocean vistas. All this, just steps from our door. We'll be focusing on plein air sketches or studies on this day with multiple, smaller paintings

Next Up: Day 3 Let's Paint At The Beach! – Today we'll head to one of the incredible pristine beaches just a short drive from Casa Buena . Here we'll set up our easels on the beach surrounded by the rustic and colourful boats, fishermen and beautiful ocean landscape. Again, we'll focus on painting plein air studies with smaller paintings. Our Final Day of Painting:

Day 4 On this day we'll hang out at Casa Buena, and today we'll focus on taking one of our plein air studies to a larger format painting, OR … you may choose to finish one of your studies. We'll use photographs you've taken on location, if necessary, to bring your ideas to fruition. Paint en plein air again in the garden or paint on the veranda, the choice is yours.

This is ‘your retreat’! Bobbi will guide you in your painting journey to create beautiful paintings in your artistic voice

A passion of pursuing painting has channeled Bobbi Dunlop's unique inner vision, experience and life wisdom into an avenue for expressing her truest reactions on canvas. Challenge, personal growth, the pursuit of greater knowledge and especially, the Glory of her Creator, have always been the main drivers of Bobbi's work.

In a traditional approach which draws upon many years of experience, Dunlop paints from life when possible.  The subject could be spontaneous and often simple.   She approaches each painting on its own merit and not by formula but based upon her innate response to her subject and how she sees it.

This sensitivity and pure joy of painting, regardless of subject, results in a beautiful synergy, often evoking a symbolic meaning or undertone.  Always, the intent is to consider the aesthetic quality of the painting and to honour beauty in its message.

She has been drawn to and inspired by the methods of the masters before her … the biggest influences being Rembrandt,  Mancini, Sargent, Zorn, Repin and Fechin to name a few.

Dunlop began her foray into teaching in 1994 and matured that side of her artist life to become a much in demand instructor. She has taken her classes online where she mentors with Mastrius and in-person with Atelier Artista and Swinton's Art Supplies. She resides in Calgary, where she paints from life, surrounded by memorabilia and works-in- progress.  Dunlop's work is enjoyed in numerous corporate and private collections in Canada, the U.S. and the UK.  Her work is represented by Bluerock Gallery.

“Ultimately, painting is about life and how uniquely one sees it. It’s about “the pursuit of knowledge” … not about technique or formulas. I believe that it is about beauty and when one looks for beauty, it will be clearly observed. Each time I begin a new painting, I look for innate beauty.

“Processes” have always fascinated me … how they intrinsically connect my work.   As I have matured as an artist, this idea has become increasingly more important:  the quality of the surfaces I choose to paint on, often hand-made; the lovely marks my brushes make; the luscious quality of the paint as I sculpt with my brush.  All of these are processes that connect me more deeply to my work and bring a joy to my daily practice of painting.
