"Unleash Your Creative Potential: Discover Painting Techniques and Visualization in a supportive environment”

Workshop description:

Would you like to expand your knowledge of painting techniques and creative visualization in a relaxed and supportive environment? Then, this workshop is for you!

Each day, Dominik will begin by explaining his process through demonstration and presentations, while students will benefit from individual assessment and critique as they work and progress.

Dominik will introduce you to different hands-on exercises, slowly building upon each block. At the outset of the workshop, Dominik will introduce students to mark-making exercises that form a fundamental basis for cultivating creative and dynamic expression, providing valuable guidance throughout the painting process. He will demonstrate color exercises based on the three primary colors to introduce students to color mixing and achieving unlimited color harmonies. He will also expand on several color contrast principles, which are the basis for successful painting. We will be focusing on spontaneous reactions and a direct method approach to brushwork and mark making, which is the signature of individual paintings. He will also dedicate time to demonstrating approaches to sketching and painting outside, where the aim is to capture the essence of the subject matter. The day's exercises will be based on a choice of photo images from Mexico, which will be provided in a digital form before the workshop.

For the remainder of the workshop, students will work around the main house, drawing on their fresh inspiration, as well as sketches, personal memory, and imagination to create a more ambitious, calculated final painting.

I prefer to paint places where I have spent a significant amount of time and had powerful emotional experiences.

After hiking or traveling on water for many miles, I choose a single location that offers many possible compositions, from close-ups to great vistas. Remaining at one location enables me to soak up the necessary energy for future studio work.

In addition to seeing, I also tune my ear to the sounds that surround me. Through experience, I have found that not all sounds can be detected and absorbed at once. It can take many days to clearly hear and associate sounds with surrounding forms.

This dimension of awareness greatly enhances the overall quality of my paintings.“

While the workshop is robust, Dominik promises a fun, friendly, and relaxed atmosphere that will lead to bursts of creative inspiration and lasting memories.

Through his travel stories and digital presentations, Dominik will inspire your creativity and invite you to search for the ultimate landscape out there!

All who attend will be able to apply the lessons learned to their own style of painting. This workshop is open to oil and acrylic media painters.

This workshop will focus on the utilization of oil painting techniques. However, we warmly welcome participants who prefer acrylic paint to bring their preferred medium.

This workshop can also be combined as an introduction to the Plein Air workshop, which follows right after this one.

Workshop Instructor:

DOMINIK MODLINSKI

Dominik Modlinski was born in 1970 in Warsaw, Poland. From an early age, he studied printmaking and later attended the School for Artistic Crafts and Design in Warsaw. In 1987, he immigrated to Canada and studied Fine Arts at Ontario College of Art in Toronto, where he graduated with honours.

Dominik’s painting journeys are a wilderness experience based upon weeks of traveling rugged and barren lands to capture, in plein air style, the majesty of nature. At the heart of his travels is a quest to discover and depict the inherent balance and truthfulness found in nature. Dominik enjoys the physical challenge that painting in such remote locations entails. It is also an opportunity to visually celebrate a unique ecosystem. For this artist, the celebration of nature is really at the heart of his work. Dominik’s northern travels have inspired him to explore further and visit many of Earth's last remaining wilderness areas. Some of the most extreme painting expeditions took him across continents and hemispheres such as Antarctica, the High Arctic, Greenland, Patagonia, into the wilds of Namibia, South Africa, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador. As we witness the disappearance of wilderness around the globe, Modlinski’s quest is to portray the need to preserve the beauty of our planet and inspire people to do so through his paintings, photographs, stories, and videos.

His other passion is martial arts, which he has studied for 35 years, and he currently holds a 6th degree black belt in Karate. Dominik currently lives and paints in Nanaimo on beautiful Vancouver Island. He is represented by fine art galleries across Canada and the USA. Art supplies for the workshop

Investing in quality art materials is essential for artists who are serious about their craft and wish to improve their skills. While it's true that cheap, hobby-type supplies can be tempting due to their lower price tags, they often lack the necessary quality and performance required to create high-quality and lasting artwork. They offer better pigmentation, color accuracy, and consistency, which allows for more precise and controlled application. This translates into improved results in terms of color vibrancy, blending, and overall visual impact.
